Part 8 Landing Zone/Pickup Zone (LZ/PZ) Operations Practice Test

In LZ/PZ operations, controlling means actively managing the movement of aircraft through and around the landing zone to keep it safe and efficient. This involves sequencing inbound helicopters, assigning landing points or directions, maintaining proper spacing, and coordinating entry and exit paths so aircraft don’t come into conflict with one another or with ground units. The controller also keeps the operation synchronized with ground actions and any nearby air traffic, adjusting as conditions change.

This focus on directing air traffic flow distinguishes it from simply planning the zone’s layout, which is about the physical arrangement of the area; from radio communications alone, which are a tool used during control but not the definition of it; or from estimating enemy strength, which isn’t part of how air traffic is managed in the zone.
